Review: The South of France (Cote d'Azur) is a fabulous location, great weather, gorgeous food and very accessible in terms of language (most people have a smattering of French!) and transport. The scenery takes your breath away, blue sea and endless beautiful properties tucked away into the hills, only becoming visible as you travel round the next bend of the Coast.
Biot is just outside Nice and five minutes walk from a train station meaning we could cheaply and easily travel to Cannes, St Tropez, one way, and Nice, Monte Carlo, even Italy, the other way.
We travelled to Biot with two small children, without a car and transport was no problem and allowed us to really enjoy the fabulous views, without worrying about the traffic!!
We were also very close to the town of Antibes and I loved the old part, very rustic and laid back. Nice was wonderful, we walked through the old quarter, which is a maze of ultra narrow streets, shaded from the sun. The castle at Monte Carlo was also wonderful. I recommend taking the bus up there (one euro) as it is quite a climb, especially with children. We found a lovely little play park up at the castle, which the kids loved and allowed us to enjoy the views. There were times when it was very hot and frustrating (mainly because we only had one buggy, and the children were wilting a bit!)and I wish I had hired an extra buggy so we could have avoided constantly having to carry our children around!
Our village had a pebbly beach, but the beach at Juan les Pains a few miles up the road was gorgeous and sandy and we loved it. We travelled in the middle of May which was co-incided with the Cannes Film festival and the Grand Prix - we couldn't take full advantage of this with our two little ones, but a great time to go if either of these events interest people. It was also not too busy and presumably not as hot as later in the summer - although it was unusually hot whilst we were there. The caravan site we stayed on was not too busy and we gained masses of valuable advice from other british tourists, some of whom were there for the whole summer and had returned year after year. We will definitely go back, we loved it.
As most people will know, France is definitely not cheap as chips, but you don't have to spend a fortune, especially if you use the supermarkets. Transport is cheap and very good.
We organised a lift from the airport through our contact at the campsite and this turned out to be cheaper than an airport taxi and stress free as we arrived in the late evening and our transfer driver was from the campsite and even had our caravan key with him! (We travelled direct from Edinburgh, flying with Globespan) |
