Review: Norton is midway between Ludlow and Hay on Wye. Its nearest town is the borders town of Presteigne.
We walked part of the Offa's Dyke Path National Trail. The building of the dyke started around 785 AD and lasted several years, and roughly follows the England-Wales border. The views from the top of the dyke's remaining mounds were amazing! The stiles at the gates between fields were not always dog friendly (some gates could not be opened, so our dog had to squeeze under the fence wire. Any breeds around the size of a German Shepherd may not manage to get through!).
Norton itself has a sweet little main shopping street which is rather rustic in parts, but the two main grocery shops seemed to sell a better variety of things than some much larger shops I've been to in the past. We even managed to get some dairy free organic chocolate and some pure vegetable soap from one of them! There's also a lovely gift shop which sells some great ethnic and alternative gifts.
If you are looking for a few days of total peace and quiet (except for birdsong and a few bleeting sheep), with some time to get back to Mother Nature, Norton (or any of the surrounding villages) would be ideal. It was an incredibly inexpensive holiday and would be even cheaper if you went with friends and shared the cost of the cottage. We will definitely be going back! |
