Review: We went to Sharm el Sheikh in April 2006 and we were not warned that it could be chilly at this time of the year. Even though the sun's out and hot there was always a chilly wind blowing which gave us goose bumps most of the time especially as we brought mainly summer clothes. So beware check the temperature with your travel agent or the internet for the time of year you are travelling. Luckily my husband brought his sweatshirt which I nicked from him and wore. Well, being a man he was gallant enough to come to my rescue. Go to Na'ma Bay (a pretty happening place-more like city centre). There you will find Hard Rock Cafe, Kentucky Fried Chicken, plenty of shops but particularly beautifully coloured Arab street cafes. These cafes are outside on the streets which are furnished with low seating Arab furniture serve all kinds of Arab food that are delicious and quite reasonable. Sample the Sheesha (for approximately £5) with sweet Arab mint tea. It is similar to sitting on the Champs Elysee in Paris watching shoppers and tourists walking by going about their business. If you are lucky at where you are sitting you could also be entertained by an Arab cultural show that is performed on one of the Roof Terrace restaurants and for free. Remember to bring your sweater and jackets as deserts are cold at night (whatever the season). If you fancy abit of an adventure try out a trip to Sinai Mountain (which is about 3hours out of Sharm El Sheikh)- your tour operator at the hotel will offer this trip - where you can witness the sun rise at 7,000ft and this is where Moses was given the 10 commandments. Word of warning it is a pretty steep climb and as a 44 year old person it is pretty hard going. The top of Sinai Mountain is -2 degress and there is heavy frost on the ground so take with you a thick jacket and cover up well - socks, gloves and hat. The climb down is shere bliss after that. Well worth a try but once again remember you need to be slightly fit (as I am not - by the way I am also a smoker - which also worked against me) but I managed it with great difficulty. Frankly I cheated and hired a camel (which costed me approximately £10) to take me 70% of the way up and then it becomes too steep for the camel to go and then you are to climb up by foot. My husband who is 55 years old managed it all the way up by foot. The rocks & boulders are loose and there is no railing or anything to hold on to however the Sherpas are very kind and very helpful. Remember the desert can be hot in daylight but also the opposite temperature at night. Remember if you choose to go in their summer which is July to August the temperature is between 38 to 42 degrees celcius. Be warned.
