Review: We booked Sharm el Sheikh as a group of 8 for the diving primarily which is exceptional - you must get at least one dive at Ras Mohammed.
Whilst there for the two weeks we also took advantage of the trips available and did a one day flight to Luxor which is a beautiful and surprisingly green place. Obviously full of history - would definitely recommend it. We also did a two day coach tour to Cairo which enabled us to take in the Sound and Light show at the Great Pyramids on the first night, as well as getting a good day tour around them. Would recommend the coach rather than flying as you get to see more of the country inc passing under the Suez Canal.
We travelled by camel for a Bedouin Nights experience. Whilst very staged this was enjoyable from the point of view of seeing the stars in a way you would not ordinarily see them. The food was good, especially the bedouin tea.
One thing not to get too hung up on is the method of selling there. All the shop owners etc will try and get you in the shops. Simply replying no thank-you (or la shokram) usually works. Be forceful but polite.
Tipping has become very normal there and there is a temptation to give too much as it seems as if you are giving nothing. Holiday reps can guide you on the best practice.
Drinking plenty of bottled water (which is cheap) is a must. Dehydration salts are useful mixed one sachet to a 2 litre bottle as a norm. Stomach problems there usually arise from dehydration rather than the food.
With regards to the diving I have dived with two centres now - Camel Dive and Oonasdivers - and both were excellent. |
