Review: Vientienne is the capital of Laos on the Mekong River. Easy to walk around or hire cycles- it's flat!!
Visit Patouxai Monument- rumoured to be built with cement donated by the USA to build the airport, so the local expats call it "the vertical runway". For a small fee you can climb the steps to the top for views over the city, take a torch in case of power cuts.
The Morning Market is a good spot to pick up gifts and Silks.
There are several cheap restaurants along the river front including Nazims a Halal indian restaurant, which also has branches in Luang Prabang & Vang Vieng.
Credit Cards are not widely accepted in Laos, when they are there is usually a 3-5% surcharge, so cash is the way to go. Carry US$$ and Thai Baht- the currencies are interchangeable with Laos kip, you'll soon get the hang of paying in 3 different currencies! There are now a couple of ATMs in Vientienne, make sure you use the "International" one. There are 2 golf courses just otside the city. (I recommend the 9 hole "KM 6" course). |
